American women have Venus and Serena, but after that the highest ranked American in the (admittedly flawed) WTA rankings is Bethanie Mattek-Sands at 39, a player who hasn’t won a tournament since 2008 and has never made it past the 4th round at a major.
But at least Serena and Venus, uncommitted though they may be at times, are favorites in every tournament they enter. The men are in dire straits. If we go 9 majors (including the current US Open) without an American man winning, it will have been 10 years since Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open win, the last American man to win a major.
